So you're going to therapy …

Even if you know you need some support, coming to your first therapy appointment can bring a mix of emotions. You may feel worried about what to expect, what your therapist will be like, what you might discuss, and how you might feel along the way – and will it even help?!

Psychological research demonstrates time and again that the relationship and trust you build with your therapist is the key ingredient to how you might benefit. While any licensed mental health provider will have training in diagnoses and treatments, finding a therapist who “fits” can be key. It’s important to review information about the therapist and their approach prior to your first visit, and to treat your initial interactions as a way to explore this new potential working relationship.

I believe effective therapy happens in the collaboration between your expertise about yourself and your life, and the expertise I can offer based on my training and clinical experience. Together these two perspectives can aid us in best understanding your challenges, strengths, and find the best paths to change.

Come to your first visit ready to be honest with me and yourself. I approach the honor and responsibility of hearing your innermost concerns and difficulties in an open, nonjudgmental, and supportive way – respecting who you are as a full person. Feel free to take notes, ask questions, and express yourself as naturally as possible (yes, people sometimes cry, curse, or both!)

If you feel this is a good fit, let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work! If I’m not the best fit, that is ok - I am happy to provide additional referrals and hope you can find a provider or service that meets your needs. Don’t give up on yourself or therapy just because one therapist didn’t work for you. You deserve to live a full and healthy life – physically and emotionally!
